Prof Paul Johnson

Prof Johnson is Director of the Oxford Islet Transplant Programme and Professor of Paediatric Surgery. He is also Director of the Human Islet Isolation Facility in Oxford.
He has been working in the field of islet isolation and islet transplantation since 1990, and was instrumental in establishing the U.K. Islet Transplant Consortium (UKITC), the first fully nationally-funded islet programme in the world.
He is Chair of the UK Islet Steering Group and Past-President of the International Pancreas and Islet Transplant Association (IPITA), and sits on a number of Research Advisory Boards and on the Editorial Boards of several scientific journals.
He leads an internationally-recognised research team which focuses on developing novel strategies to enable islet transplantation to eventually be used for children with type 1 diabetes mellitus soon after diagnosis. The group has been actively researching ways of preventing hypoxic islet damage and improving oxygenation after islet macro-encapsulation.
